For years now, I’ve been looking for something that’s the ‘right’ blend of pleasant and low-key to listen to while I work.

When I do get into a flow state, I don’t care about what’s going on around me anyway. But when I’m not so lucky, I want to put on something that will help me get as close to that flow state as possible.

The sounds I found so far are ranked based on three criteria: dynamism, fullness, and the overall feel of the sound. I want the music to vary enough so that an hour in, I don’t end up feeling like I’m trapped in some backrooms situation.

But I find it hard to concentrate if the music has decipherable lyrics or dramatic crescendos, so you won’t find acoustic songs or classical pieces on this list.

I also want my sound to have enough layers or noise, so I don’t hear whatever’s going on around me. So, here’s what I tried so far:

5. Phonk music

  • Dynamism: ✩ — — — — • Fullness: ✩ ✩ — — • Overall feel: ✩✩ — — —
